As Hope For Families Counselling Centre’s new self-help facilitator, I have been working with the team there to develop a vision and plan for our self-help programs.
Embracing Your Phoenix is our program for teens and young adults who are dealing with illness. Our focus is to provide events and groups where we can help each other manage our illnesses and remind ourselves that we are people first.
The Phoenix Zine is a part of this endeavour and will continue to put out weekly posts. I encourage you to view this site as an online community that I would love to have your input on. If you have suggestions, would like to volunteer to answer our Ten Questions, or are willing to write your own article for the site, please let me know.
To give background on why we’ve used the phoenix, I rewrote my Hello section on the right side of the site. I’ve also included a space to list upcoming Embracing Your Phoenix events and groups, an updated bio of myself and at the very bottom, the new logo.
I’m happy to announce after much discussion and planning, our first event will be held Friday, March 28th at 7 pm at the Stanley Park Community Centre in Kitchener, Ontario.
We’re calling it Change Your Chain. (Kudos go out to Cagri for the awesome poster which is linked to the event title.) Show your individuality by replacing the boring stainless steel chain on your medic alert with a chain you’ve made yourself or create a keychain using beads to tell your story.
Come and get to know me and my team members, meet others your age also dealing with illness, eat and find out about upcoming groups we’re offering. I hope to see you there!
Remember, you’re more than your illness, you’re embracing your phoenix.
To promote this event, I will be speaking on the Hope For Families radio show on 94.3 Faith FM in Kitchener on Monday, March 24th at 9 pm. Listen live online.
